What Is a Holter Monitor?

Holter monitors provide continuous testing to give more thorough information about your heart rate and rhythm. These monitors are battery operated and portable, typically being used for at least 24 or 48 hours in order to measure and record information about your heart’s activity for an extended period of time.

This will provide our WHMG-affliated doctors with important information about your heart health, such as:

• Whether or not your current medications are effective
• Whether or not your heart is receiving enough oxygen
• The cause of symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, dizziness, and fainting

Holter monitors are painless and safe. These devices are very small and will be attached to your skin with electrodes. Your technician will help you understand how to care for and store your monitor as you maintain it over the testing period. You will need to refrain from getting wet, and avoid metal detectors, magnets, and high-voltage areas, as well as getting any X-rays while you area wearing the monitor. Your technician from Washington Health Medical Group will tell you how to keep a record of your actions and any symptoms you experience as you are tested. This record will be compared to the information included in your monitor readings at the end of the test period.
