Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformation AVM
A cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal connection between blood vessels in the brain that is usually present from birth. Many AVMs do not cause symptoms, but some may lead to headaches, seizures, or bleeding in the brain. Symptoms can develop at any age but often appear in adults between 30 and 45.
Bleeding from an AVM usually occurs within the brain tissue and can cause serious complications, including brain damage or neurological problems.
There are different types of AVMs, each with its own risk of bleeding and treatment options. Your neurosurgeon will evaluate the size, location, and type of AVM to determine the best approach for you.
The main goal of treatment is to prevent bleeding and reduce the risk of complications. In some cases, surgery may also help control seizures. Treatment options may include microsurgery to remove the abnormal blood vessels, minimally invasive procedures using small catheters to block blood flow to the AVM, or targeted radiation therapy.
Your neurosurgeon will discuss your options and recommend a treatment plan based on your individual needs.
