What Is the Ion Robot?
The Ion robot is an advanced technology that helps physicians navigate the small, branching airways of the lungs to reach suspicious nodules and collect tissue for testing.
Using 3D imaging and a thin, flexible catheter, the Ion robot helps physicians plan and navigate a precise path to the nodule, even when it is deep within the lung or difficult to reach.
The goal is simple: help you get answers and determine the right next step in your care.
Why Is the Ion Robot Important?
Helps reach difficult-to-access nodules
Some lung nodules are deep within the lungs or in areas that can be difficult to reach. The Ion robot helps physicians navigate these challenging areas.
Uses 3D technology for precise navigation
A 3D model created from a CT scan helps physicians plan a route to the nodule before the procedure. The Ion robot then helps guide the catheter through the small airways of the lungs.
Can reach very small nodules
The Ion robot can help physicians reach and biopsy small lung nodules, including nodules less than 1 centimeter wide, about the size of a pea.
Minimally invasive
The thin, flexible catheter travels through the body's natural airways, avoiding an incision through the chest. The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis.
Multiple nodules can be evaluated
When appropriate, physicians may be able to biopsy more than one lung nodule during the same procedure.
Why Does Early Diagnosis Matter?
A lung nodule does not necessarily mean you have cancer. Nodules can develop for many reasons, including previous infections, inflammation or other noncancerous conditions. Many lung nodules are benign, but some may require further evaluation.
If a nodule looks suspicious, a biopsy can help determine what it is. Getting an accurate diagnosis can help your physician understand the nodule and recommend the most appropriate next steps for your care. When lung cancer is found early, it may be more likely to be localized and treatable.
