Screening for Colorectal Cancer in Fremont

Colon and rectum cancers—otherwise known as colorectal cancer—can occur both in men and women. In fact, colorectal cancer is the third leading type of cancer in the United States for both men and women. That’s why it is important to screen frequently for these types of cancers. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), up to 60% of deaths caused by colorectal cancer could be prevented if men and women over age 50 scheduled annual screenings. Am I At Risk for Colorectal Cancer?

Two of the major factors for colorectal cancer are age and genetics. It is recommended that people over the age of 50 obtain colonoscopy screenings at least every 10 years. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you should be even more vigilant. Some health professionals recommend getting screenings 10 years before the age of the onset of cancer in their family member or at age 40, whichever comes first.

Additional risk factors include:

• Personal medical history of intestinal polyps
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Inactivity / lack of exercise
• Obesity
• Large amounts of red meat / processed meats
• Excessive alcohol drinking
• Tobacco use

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) at Washington Health Medical Group

Our team at WHMG offers patients the use of a high-definition diagnostic tool called endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). This tool combines both ultrasound and endoscopy for clear, detailed pictures. EUS can also be used for staging colorectal cancer, telling the doctor about information regarding where the cancer has spread in order to plan the most effective treatment. EUS involves use of an ultrasound device placed at the end of an endoscope.
