Capsule Endoscopy Instructions

Instructions for Capsule Endoscopy Preparation

A capsule endoscopy allows wireless images of the gastrointestinal tract to be captured by a small camera that fits inside a pill-shaped capsule, which is then swallowed by the patient. Before a capsule endoscopy procedure, your doctor is likely to request that you avoid food and drink for a minimum of 12 hours before the time of the appointment. This ensures that your digestive tract is cleared, so the doctor can get a good visual. Your doctor may also request that you take a laxative prior to your procedure, which can help the images come out clearer.

You may also need to refrain from taking some medications, which could also compromise the picture. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking. In some cases, your doctor may simply request specific timing for when you take your medications. After your procedure is done, you should know that your day will need to be fairly restful. Plan accordingly ahead of time!

Your doctor will most likely request that you avoid:

  • Heavy lifting
  • Strenuous exercise
  • If your job requires you to be active, talk to your doctor about whether or not you can go back to work
