Structural Heart Program
What is Structural Heart Disease?
Structural heart disease refers to problems with the heart’s valves, walls, or chambers—the physical parts of the heart that help blood flow in the right direction. These conditions are often present at birth (congenital) or develop over time due to aging, wear and tear, or other health conditions.
Common examples include:
- Narrowed or leaking heart valves (like aortic stenosis or mitral regurgitation)
- Holes in the heart (such as atrial septal defects)
- Issues with the heart’s structure that affect how blood moves through it
What does this mean for patients?
When the heart’s structure isn’t working properly, it can make it harder for your body to get the oxygen-rich blood it needs. This may cause symptoms like:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Chest discomfort
- Dizziness or fainting
How is it treated?
Many structural heart conditions can now be treated with minimally invasive procedures, often without open-heart surgery. These treatments use small tubes (catheters) inserted through a blood vessel to repair or replace parts of the heart.
Some of the procedures performed include:
- Mitral valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (MTEER)/transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER)
- Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO)
- Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR)
- Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR)
- Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Closure
- Valve-in-valve (ViV)
- Ventricular septal defect (VSD)
- Paravalvular leak (PVL)
Our approach
We bring together a team of heart specialists—cardiologists, surgeons, imaging experts, and care coordinators—to evaluate each patient and recommend the best treatment plan. Our goal is to help you feel better, recover faster, and get back to your daily life.
