Diagnostic Tests Used in Internal Medicine

A doctor of internal medicine uses various resources to provide patients with answers explaining their symptoms.   • Laboratory Tests - Laboratory tests are used to find out what is causing certain symptoms, as well as to screen patients for various conditions and illnesses. Lab tests use a sample from the patient’s body in order to provide diagnostic results. There are various types of laboratory tests that your doctor may order for different purposes. These tests include: blood test, urine samples, throat swabs, stool samples, spinal taps, and lumbar punctures. 
  • Imaging Scans - Radiologists use advanced diagnostic medical imaging to obtain clear pictures of the inside of patients’ bodies for various diagnostic purposes. Today’s advanced technology and leading-edge techniques allow for unprecedented clarity and scope in these types of imaging processes. There are various types of imaging technology, including but not limited to: X-rays (computerized tomography (CT) scans, mammography), molecular imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. 
  • Biopsies - A biopsy is a type of test that your doctor may order after another test reveals an abnormality in some tissue in the body. This tissue may be referred to by your physician as a: mass, lesion, or tumor. Types of biopsy tests that could be taken could include: CT-guided, needle, bone, bone marrow, ultrasound-guided, aspiration, skin, surgical, and many more biopsies. 

Different Types of Testing

Different types of tests are used in finding the root causes of different symptoms, and vary depending on the symptoms and the type of pain, discomfort, or other irregularities experienced by the patient. In some cases, some tests may simply be utilizes as part of a routine checkup to determine overall wellness and to screen for potential diseases or problems including various forms of cancer.

Laboratory tests are tests that involve examining samples from a patient’s body. Laboratory tests include blood tests, urine tests, spinal taps or “lumbar punctures,” stool samples, and throat swabs. Imaging scans are used to obtain clear images of the inside of the body. Many of these tests are non-invasive and include methods such as X-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), and computerized tomography (CT) scans. A biopsy involves taking a sample of tissue from your body for examination under a powerful microscope, or other forms of testing / analysis.
