What Causes Kidney Disease / Injury?

Sudden loss of kidney function—i.e. acute kidney injury or acute renal failure (ARK)—is usually caused by one of three factors:

• Damage to kidneys
• Backed-up urine in the kidneys
• Loss of blood flow to the kidneys

When kidneys stop working properly for a period of over three months, the patient is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). One of the most dangerous aspects of CKD is the fact that the patient may not exhibit any symptoms until the condition has advanced significantly and caused irreversible damage. Causes of CKD include diabetes, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, immune system disorders, birth defects, certain drugs including illegal substances, and polycystic kidney disease.
