What Are the Symptoms of an Infectious Disease? 

Every infectious disease has its own set of unique signs and symptoms. The individual symptoms depend on the type of organism causing the disease. Examples of some of the symptoms that are common to a large number of conditions in this category include:

  • Laboratory Tests – These include blood tests, urine tests, throat swabs, stool samples, and spinal tap / lumbar puncture.
  • Imaging Scans – Imaging techniques may be used in studying and diagnosing infectious diseases, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) scans, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, optical modalities, and radiography.
  • Biopsies – Biopsies involve examination of tissue removed from the patient in order to learn about a disease that may be present.
