3D Mammography
At the Washington Women's Center, we offer advanced 3D mammography in a comfortable, supportive setting. Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, 3D mammography creates detailed images of the breast from multiple angles, allowing radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer.
Digital mammography technology allows radiologists to enlarge and adjust images for a closer look at areas of breast tissue without requiring additional images. This can be particularly helpful when evaluating dense breast tissue, which can make some abnormalities more difficult to see.
Benefits of 3D Mammography
3D mammography can:
- Provide detailed images of breast tissue from multiple angles
- Help radiologists see abnormalities more clearly
- Reduce the effect of overlapping breast tissue on images
- Help detect some breast cancers earlier
- Provide additional information when an area of concern is identified
Your radiologist will review your images and determine whether additional breast imaging or follow-up is needed.
Computer-Aided Detection (CAD)
Our radiologists may use computer-aided detection (CAD) technology as an additional tool when reviewing mammograms.
CAD analyzes mammogram images and highlights areas that may require a closer look. It acts as an additional set of eyes for the radiologist but does not replace the radiologist's expertise or judgment.
The radiologist reviews the mammogram and may use CAD to identify areas that warrant additional evaluation before completing the final report.

You will need a physician order prior to your appointment date. Be sure to bring you physician order with you to avoid appointment delays.
Preparing for Your Mammogram
Knowing what to expect can help make your mammogram appointment easier and more comfortable.
Before Your Appointment
Bring your previous mammograms, if possible. If you have had mammograms at another facility, we encourage you to have those images sent to the Washington Women's Center before your appointment.
Comparing your current mammogram with previous images can help the radiologist identify changes in your breast tissue over time and may prevent the need for additional imaging.
If you don't have your previous images, our team can help request them with your permission.
On the Day of Your Mammogram
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in and changing.
For the most accurate images:
- Do not apply deodorant, talcum powder, lotion or other products to your underarms or breasts before your mammogram. Some products can appear on the images and affect the results.
- Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up.
- You will be provided with a gown or robe for your exam.
Our Women's Center is designed with your privacy and comfort in mind. If you need assistance or have questions before your mammogram, please let our team know.
Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
Mammograms are an important tool for detecting breast cancer, sometimes before there are signs or symptoms.
Screening recommendations can vary based on your age, breast cancer risk and personal or family history. Talk with your referring physician about the screening schedule that is right for you.
You may need a different screening plan if you have an increased risk of breast cancer. This may include starting screening at a younger age or having additional imaging, such as breast MRI.
Mammography Screening Guidelines
If You Have Breast Symptoms
A screening mammogram is intended for people who do not have breast symptoms. If you notice a new change in your breast, contact your referring physician. Symptoms may include:
- A new lump or thickening
- Changes in the size or shape of your breast
- Changes in the skin, such as dimpling or redness
- Nipple changes or unusual nipple discharge
- Any other new or unusual breast change
Your physician can determine whether you need diagnostic breast imaging or other evaluation.
