Bio
Dr. Achanta is a fellowship-trained, board-certified general surgeon specializing in laparoscopic surgery. He joined the surgery department at Washington Health in Fremont in April 2001 as part of a local multispecialty medical group.
Dr. Achanta earned his medical degree from Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India. He completed his general surgery residency at a Tufts University-affiliated hospital in Boston, followed by a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at USC in Los Angeles. After completing his training, he served as a clinical instructor in surgery at USC and later as a staff surgeon at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Orange County.
His surgical expertise includes minimally invasive and traditional abdominal procedures, including gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, colon surgery, and surgery involving the spleen and adrenal glands. His practice also includes breast surgery, colon and rectal surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, reflux surgery, and stomach surgery.
Dr. Achanta has continued to expand his surgical training, receiving robotic surgery privileges in 2021 and completing da Vinci technology training in 2024. He is trained to use the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system, which provides surgeons with enhanced visualization and specialized instruments to perform certain procedures with greater precision.
Dr. Achanta has also authored textbook chapters and research articles published in national and international surgical journals. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).
Dr. Achanta has served as Chair of the General Surgery Section and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Washington Health. He is also committed to medication safety and quality of care. He has served on the hospital’s Clinical Evaluation Committee (CEC) and Pharmacy, Nutrition and Therapeutics (PN&T) Committee for eight years and currently serves as Chair of the PN&T Committee.
